The man who returned his grandfather’s looted art

At the end of the 19th Century British troops looted thousands of works of art from the Benin Empire - in modern-day Nigeria - and brought them home. One soldier's grandson inherited two bronzes but recently returned them to their original home.
"It's an image that's deeply ingrained in my memory. The dead body seemed unreal. It's not a picture you can easily forget," says Mark Walker.
He was 12 years old when he first saw his grandfather's diary - the photographs inside made a deep impression.
"They were very faded, but perhaps the most shocking one for me was a partly dried-up body being held up by two men on a pole.
"Clearly the people lifting the body didn't actually want to touch it and that seemed to me to capture the feeling my grandfather also had about them. It was something so horrible you wanted to keep it at arm's length," says Mark.
The pictures were taken by his grandfather, Capt Herbert Walker, in West Africa in 1897.
The two Walkers never met - Herbert died in 1932, 15 years before his grandson was born and Mark's grandmother showed him the journal, titled To Benin and back, while he was staying with her in 1959.

The Benin Kingdom, which is now part of Nigeria, had a wealth of natural resources including ivory, palm oil and rubber which the UK was keen to control.

But in January 1897, seven British officials who were on their way to see the Oba of Benin - the king - were killed in an ambush.
The Times of London reported that the men "on quite a peaceful mission" had been "massacred by the King's people".

It is unclear who, if anyone, ordered the killings and there are indications that the mission was not as peaceful as the British press described it. Although its leader, acting Consul-General James Phillips had sent a message to the Oba asking to discuss trade and peace, he had told London he wanted to depose him.
The killing of Phillips and his men provoked a devastating response - the UK decided to punish the Oba, Ovonramwen, and launched the Benin Punitive Expedition.
It sent almost 500 men to destroy Benin City - Herbert Walker was one of them.
After 10 days of fighting Ovonramwen fled.
Diary 18 February describes "two crucifixion trees, one for men and the other for women with victims around them... we found bodies of slaves, newly sacrificed and placed across the path"Capt Walker kept a diary during the Benin Punitive Expedition
"The city is the most gruesome sight I've ever seen," wrote Herbert. "The whole pace is littered with sculls & corpses in various stages of decay, many of them fresh human sacrifices. Outside the king's palace were two crucifixion trees, one for men & the other for women, with the victims on & around them. As we approached the city through the bush, we found bodies of slaves newly sacrificed & placed across the path to bring the Benis luck, while they lay in holes, or behind cover, & 'sniped' at us as we passed."
It was a photograph of this scene that Mark saw six decades later. According to Herbert, the sacrifices were carried out by the people of Benin to appease the Gods while they tried to ward off the attack by the British army.
It's not clear how many Benis died in the fighting - no official count of the bodies was carried out. But some Nigerians have called it "the most brutal massacre of the colonial era".
"The British had much better weapons so it was something of an uneven battle," says Mark, a retired doctor from Wales.
Herbert's diary describes how the British fired Maxim machine guns and rockets at their enemies.
The Oba of Benin on his way to exile in 1897The British exiled the Oba of Benin to Calabar after his trial
After the killing came the looting - the British seized more than 2,000 artworks and religious artefacts, most of them hundreds of years old, which were sent back to England.
Herbert describes how a fellow officer "is now wandering round with chisel & hammer, knocking off brass figures & collecting all sorts of rubbish as loot". Religious buildings and palaces were torched.
The Oba was eventually exiled to Calabar in south-eastern Nigeria, after a British court acquitted him of the killings that sparked the attack. But by the time the monarchy was restored in 1914, the independent kingdom of Benin no longer existed - it had become part of Nigeria, which was then a British colony.

Most of the objects taken from his palace were sold in Europe and about 800 of them eventually ended up in the British Museum where they are still on display.
The museum's director, Neil MacGregor, has said it was a "revelation" to Western scholars that refined metal work such as this had been made in 16th Century Africa.
A few of the artefacts were kept as souvenirs by the officers who were there - Herbert held on to two pieces, a so-called "bird of prophecy", known as an Oro bird, and a bell used to invoke ancestors.
Mark inherited them in 2013. "I was surprised, having coveted them for so many years that when I finally came in possession of them I found myself asking what their future was," he says.
His children weren't interested in them and he did not want them sold at auction after his death.

"As you come into your 60s you realise you have got to start making preparations for moving away from this life. I was asking myself, 'What do I want them for?' Possessions aren't as important as I used to think when I was younger," says Walker.
He came across the Richard Lander Society, an organisation that campaigns for the Benin artworks to be returned to the royal palace in Benin City. It helped him contact the right people and last year Walker travelled to Nigeria to hand the bronzes to the present Oba, the great-grandson of the King deposed by Herbert and his colleagues.
"It was very humbling to be greeted with such enthusiasm and gratitude, for nothing really. I was just returning some art objects to a place where I feel they will be properly looked after," says Mark.

But in the minds of the people of Benin City it wasn't nothing.
"Those things that were removed were chapters of our history book," says Prince Edun Akenzua, a younger brother of the current Oba.
"When they were made, the Benin people did not know how to write, so whatever happened, the Oba instructed the bronze casters to record it.
"We saw the removal as a grave injustice and we are hoping that someday people will see why we are asking for these things back," he says.
Prince Edun has lobbied the British Parliament for all the looted items to be returned to Benin City and argues that the British Museum should keep replicas instead.
"The English returned the Stone of Scone to Scotland some years ago. So why can't they return our things? They mean so much to us but they mean nothing to the British," he says.

  • The British Museum holds 800 pieces including bronze, ivory, clay, wooden, and iron objects
  • Its collection was developed over many years - some items were donated in 1898 and many more in the early to mid-20th Century
  • The kingdom of Benin dominated trade between the Nigerian coast and Europe from the late 1400s to the end of the 1900s
  • Portuguese traders arrived in Benin in the 1400s bringing brass bracelets, known asmanillas, to exchange for pepper, ivory and slaves
  • The artists of Benin melted them down to create objects to decorate the Oba's palace

The British Museum says it has not recently received any new official requests for the return of the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
"As a museum of the world for the world the British Museum presents the Benin Bronzes in a global context alongside the stories of other cultures and makes these objects as available as possible to a global audience," it says in a statement.
One argument that has been put forward is that the objects are in danger of getting lost if returned to Nigeria, something Prince Edun dismisses as absurd.
"It's a bit like if someone were to steal my car in Benin City and I found it in Lagos, and could prove that it was mine. And the thief told me, 'OK, you can have your car back if you can convince me that you've built an electronically controlled garage to keep the car. Until you do that, I will not return it to you.'"

There are plans to establish a museum in the Oba's palace where returned items can be put on public display.
Looking back, Mark says he feels no shame at his grandfather's part in the Benin Punitive Expedition.
"His diary shows that he had a sense of humanity rather than what I was expecting to find - a shared sense of racial superiority.
"We are taught from a very young age that the killing of enemy combatants under the umbrella of statehood is a regrettable necessity of life," he says.
A street in Benin / now NigeriaOne of the photographs in Herbert Walker's diary
As for the looted artworks, he believes his grandfather did what everybody else did at that time.
"To him, it was probably no more than picking up stuff that's washed up on the beach, because people had fled and nobody owned them any longer."
But he is happy they are now back in Benin City. "These objects are part of the cultural heritage of another people… to the people of Benin City, these objects are priceless."
Does your family have artworks looted from former colonies? If so, please tell us their stories. A selection of comments will be published.

2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS: FACTUAL ANALYSES AND MY ENDORSEMENT (14) (PICTORIAL)

It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished (Voltaire)Your religion is what you do when the sermon is over (H. Jackson Brown, Jr.)
There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people (Howard Zinn)
Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority (Arthur Schopenhauer)

Deciphering of Buhari's statement continues:
uhari said in his statement "However, because they can't attack our record, they accuse me falsely of ethnic jingoism; they accuse me falsely of religious fundamentalism. Because they cannot attack our record, they accuse us falsely of calling for election violence - when we have only insisted on peace. Even as Head of State, we never imposed Sharia. All my running mates have been either Igbo or Yoruba and are always devout Christian of indisputable repute. I have and will continue to condemn those who burn God's places of worship, be they churches or mosques and wish God's judgment upon them. As your President, their punishment won't stop there, we will also ensure Boko Haram and other such elements, are found, are arrested and face the full wrath of the law as punishment for their crimes against our country. My dear friends, this is very important to note: It doesn't matter if you are Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Hausa, Idea, Efik, Ekwere, Urhobo, Igala and, no, it does not matter if you are Christian, Muslim, animist or atheist: we need a new direction under a new leadership. The task ahead will be challenging and daunting, but it is surmountable".Buhari should know that he is everything he was accused of above, and I will use facts to contradict him. Buhari is violence personified, so he should stop deceiving gullible Nigerians. Boko Haram and MEND, the two deadly organizations in Nigeria, endorsed Buhari for the 2015 election. What does that say about Buhari's candidacy? Look at this: Buhari campaigned in Maiduguri, Borno State, Boko Haram's fiefdom, on Feb. 16, and, Boko Haram "sheathed its sword" and allowed Buhari to campaign and go without attacking anybody. A mammoth crowd turned out to listen to what he had to tell them, and nobody was hurt, because, a Boko Haram staunch sponsor was in town, so nobody messed up the situation for him. But President Jonathan had to sneak into Maiduguri to campaign few weeks ago, after a massive security build up was put in place for his visit. During The Vanguard interview quoted in the preceding part of this article, Buhari was asked "Now that you say that you are a democrat, what do you think you can do to combat Boko Haram and the galloping corruption in your country?" Buhari then roped himself in as one of the reasons Boko Haram is perpetrating mayhem against the Nigerian state, by saying: "We know how Boko Haram started. I believe that it will not be difficult for an APC government to deal with Boko Haram because we know that the Nigerian military is competent".

On election violence: How many churches were burnt in the north when Buhari lost in 2011, how many Nigerians died because Buhari lost in 2011? Buhari knows too well that The International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague, Netherlands, is looking into a case brought against him by a coalition of 17 non-governmental organizations operating primarily in the Northern states of Nigeria calling for his prosecution over the post-election violence of 2011. The organization, according to 247ureports, has already sought the services of an interactional human rights lawyer working with ICC. The group said in Abuja that it has evidence that the highly inflammatory public comments made by Buhari prior to, during and immediately after the elections-led directly to the deaths of over 800 people and the displacement of more than 65,000 individuals in April 2011". It was the fear of arrest by ICC that made Buhari to put off his earlier planned trip to the United States.

So what is he talking about? Buhari travelled to UK now, after an assurance from the British authorities that he would not be arrested for the attempted kidnapping of Umaru Dikko and the other crimes hanging on his neck. Pointblanknews wrote: "Contrary to claims by the Muhammadu Buhari's campaign organization, the All Progressive Congress (APC) standard bearer's name is not listed by the Chatham House as speaker any time soon. Spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, said Buhari is expected to hold meetings with key members of the British political establishment and interact with some global institutions with stakeholder interest in the affairs of Nigeria. "He would give a talk at the prestigious foreign policy hub, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House London," the statement said. Checks by Pointblanknews.com reveal that event listed on Royal Institute of International Affairs website; http:// www.chathamhouse.org/events to hold on February 23 and 24 is; 'Security and Defence: Rising powers and the future of defence cooperation' and Buhari's name is not listed among the speakers. It was also learnt that Buhari is being treated at a hospital located at Cavendish Street, Cavendish Square, W2 London West End, London."

Dr. Deborah Nelson from Sobi, Ilorin, Kwara State, wrote a letter to Buhari. This was lifted from there: "Sir, you are one of a few Nigerians who had been blessed by Allah/God, even to a fault. You have been a General Officer Commanding, Military Governor, Federal Commissioner of NNPC, Head of State and C-in-C of Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of PTF just to mention a few. At a ripe age of 72, what do you want again from Allah/God? In 2011, ten [10] youth coppers were among hundreds of innocent non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians slaughtered by your supporters in northern Nigeria even before INEC announced the results of the presidential election. As if that is not bloody and despicable enough, you have promised to soak non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians whom you prefer to call 'dogs and baboons' in blood if you lose presidential election in 2015. If one may ask, after butchering these Nigerians you call 'dogs and baboons' in 2015, what next? Sir, you may be 'untouchable' with millions of human robots [almajiri supporters] at your command to do whatever you like here on earth, but note that one day, you will stand before your creator [Allah/God] alone for judgment"

Dr Deborah Nelson, continuing in her letter to Buhari, further wrote: "You supported introduction of Sharia Laws in the north in 2000 and advised Muslims to vote only for politicians who would protect Islam. When ex-Governor Yerima was criticized for amputating a Muslim's hand for stealing, you supported it and asked' what is wrong if, according to Sharia Laws, Muslims cut off another Muslim's hand for stealing?' You said that Boko Haram terrorists were fighting for their rights like Niger Delta militants did. You also called on Federal Government to grant them amnesty and stop dropping bombs on 'innocent northerners'. In recognition of your support, Boko Haram terrorists nominated you to lead their delegation for negotiation with Federal Government. A member of European Parliament, Mr. Franz Obermayr, accused you of sponsoring Boko Haram terrorists, but up till date you have not reacted to this weighty allegation. Also, you have not even for once condemned the on-going widespread destruction of lives and properties of northern minorities by Fulani herdsmen in the north. Because of these amongst others, you are the most popular living politician amongst Hausa Fulani Muslims, especially Islamic fundamentalists who believe that you are the 'Amir' who will surely implement Sharia Laws in Nigeria. For the same reasons Sir, non-Hausa Fulani/Kanuri Nigerians fear and detest you with a passion, especially northern minorities who are being butchered daily by Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram terrorists.

People of Niger Delta believe that you are amongst core north politicians who sponsor Boko Haram terrorists and Fulani herdsmen to destabilize Jonathan's administration. Consequently, if you win in 2015, they will also make your government ungovernable by disrupting oil and gas production throughout the period of your government. Due to non availability of funds, it will be difficult for governments at all levels to function. Funding for security forces will be considerably reduced thereby weakening their capacity and commitment to fight Boko Haram terrorists, Fulani herdsmen and militants in the creeks of Niger Delta. The environment so created will be conducive for Boko Haram terrorists to easily achieve their aim of establishing a Caliphate at least in north eastern states. The center will be too weak to enforce laws and order thereby encouraging 'self help' and gradual but sustained disintegration of the nation. Sir, with the same zeal that galvanizes you to continuously re-contest, please do use it to arrange for alternative sources of revenue because it will never be business as usual as far as oil and gas revenue is concerned, or else be prepared to go down in history as a Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachov of Nigeria".

Thomas S. Monson (1927) wrote that "Perhaps the surest test of an individual's integrity is his refusal to do or say anything that would damage his self-respect", but, Buhari showed that he is still an ethnic jingoist, when he said, on BBC Hausa services monitored in Kaduna on Friday 30 January 2015, that, "the Igbos hate him for what happened during the Biafran war". "I don't have any regret, and at such do not owe any apology to them, infact if there is a repeat of the civil war again, I will kill more Igbos to save the country". The APC presidential candidate added that this was the reason they never bothered to vote for him anywhere in Nigeria. Someone then wrote thereafter that "It is shame that a man that is aspiring to rule the whole country, not part of it, will talk in this manner. BEWARE; THIS MAN HAS NEVER TALKED ABOUT PEACE, BUT BLOODBATH AND PAIN". Read more comments below!

Finally, Buhari said in his statement in the preceding part of this article: "We will protect your children. We will protect your wealth. We will make this country work again. This is why I am running for the office of the president of Nigeria. This is my promise." These are all fake promises; he never protected Nigerian children before, infact if Buhari had stayed longer as the head of state, many Nigerian youths, including yours truly, would have dropped out of the university, because, Buhari was about introducing school fees in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria before he was overthrown, and that, his overthrow, made it possible for many of us to complete our university education. Don't forget that it was Buhari who also removed the meal subsidy in 1984. Buhari should take Shagari's advice and quit, because, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) rightly said that "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves". The Africa Business World, on Wed, February 04, 2015, wrote that the former Nigerian President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has asked Gen. Mohammad Buhari to quit the Presidential race altogether.

Former President Shehu Shagari

In a letter the president wrote to Muhammad Buhari, Shehu Shagari reminded Buhari that he was the one that truncated early democratic government in Nigeria, in 1983 when Buhari staged a military coup to remove the elected Shagari and his government from power. Shagari told Buhari that he had no courage to ask him and his people to vote for him because of what he did to him. The former president said, "You truncated democracy with a dastardly coup and took away power from me. You humiliated me and made me to suffer, and you took away my opportunity to RULE Nigeria. You said you do not want democracy in Nigeria. The same democracy you truncated, you are fighting hard to get with desperation and diabolical power". In the same letter, the former president is still unhappy with Buhari for the illegal military coup that set the nation on a slippery slope of which the nation is still suffering the consequences today. Shagari said: "You have entered into unholy alliance with some known elements of disunity in the south but let me warn you. You will suffer hard in the hands of Tinubu and his political merchants who will use and dump you as they did to Nuhu. In 2011, you cried publicly when you lost election, and you made provocative and inciting statements that plunged this country into untoward unrest". Shagari asked Mohammad Buhari to quit the race because Nigerians have not forgiven him for his past actions. In Shagari's words: "Quit the presidential race now and save this country from the dangling sword of Damocles being menacingly wield by the crooks who surround you". A word is enough for a wise!

Let me allow in other people's comments. For the disdainful and annoying statement Buhari made about the civil war (where he said: "the Igbos hate him for what happened during the Biafran war". "I don't have any regret, and at such do not owe any apology to them, infact if there is a repeat of the civil war again, I will kill more Igbos to save the country"):

Ihenadiogu wrote:

"This comment associated with a onetime Head of State of Nigeria and now the flag bearer of APC a major political party Gen. Mohammed Buhari in the upcoming election to replace president Good luck Jonathan went beyond just a hand shake but a homicidal threat against the people of Igbo extraction. This is the next thing to the pogrom and genocide against Ndiigbo which he has eloquently bragged about. It is in a situation like this that galvanizes Ndiigbo to reflect and do something about their future. Without a doubt the botched Biafra war left a sour taste in our mouth but we learned a lesson from it such that we can apply to save our next generation. We shall be judged to leave such a brazen snake in our midst without scotching it at best. This is when elders and leaders summon the people to articulate a way forward. We shall give a mandate to all Igbo candidates that are fraternizing with APC to either renounce their allegiance or face a rude awakening and banishment. Please this not about politics, Ndiigbo must confront this kind of mindset with what is left within them to ensure that "Never Again"

I therefore challenge all Igbo Diaspora organizations to settle their differences and rally round and come up with action plan to counter this kind of threat to our human existence in today's world, otherwise there will be a repeat performance of the 1966/7 - 70 homicidal genocide level against us by the Hausa/Fulani hegemony lead by the likes of Buhari, Danjuma and Gowon ETC. This meeting was due yesterday and further delay is an acceptance that this man whose only stack of qualification is that he killed Ndiigbo in droves would get away with murder. WIC, IWA, CISA, all state and regional associations, erudite scholars, leaders of thought, women associations ETC this is your time to shine.

Peace,"

I HAVE news for APC stalwarts. You don’t win an election in Nigeria by being the champion of social media. You don’t win by renting crowds to fill up your rallies. You don’t win by putting up your billboards everywhere while tearing down those of your opponents. You don’t win by master-minding in the media a false sense of the inevitability of your victory. When you do all this successfully, you simply end up deceiving yourself.

IF Nigeria is a nation of laws and of the rule of law, the presidential candidacy of Muhammadu Buhari should end this week. The reason is well-known to all. Buhari swore an oath on his INEC application that his credentials are with the military. This turned out to be a lie.

At the 1985 Summit in Addis Ababa, statesmen like Julius Nyerere, President of Tanzania, lobbied for his election as substantive Secretary-General. However, there was a major stumbling block to Peter Onu’s candidature: his Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, was campaigning against him.

THESE are interesting times. Muhammadu Buhari, the APC presidential candidate whose only policy plank is that he will fight against corruption without wavering, is not as straight-forward as he would have Nigerians believe. Buhari lied under oath. He perjured himself claiming his school-leaving certificate is with the military. This has now been revealed to be a tissue of lies.

NOTHING better encapsulates the pathetic nature of the current re-branding of Muhammadu Buhari than his sudden appearance in a black western suit; something that has not happened before.  This window-dressing just won’t cut it.  Given his sectarian antecedents, Buhari will be hard-pressed to convince anyone that he is western in any way, shape or form.  Indeed, in this era of rampant Islamic fundamentalism and insurgency, a Buhari presidency would close the doors of many Western interests to Nigeria in our hour of need.

On September 24, 2014, Atiku Abubakar of the APC declared at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja that he was running to be president of Nigeria. The occasion was without incident. This was followed on October 15, 2014 by Muhammadu Buhari of the APC who declared in Eagle’s Square, Abuja that he was also running for president. Again, the occasion was without incident.

By Femi Aribisala Bola Tinubu is not a democrat, has never been a democrat and will never be a democrat. There is a popular Yoruba song that says: “Eko o gba gbere rara o.” It means: “Lagos does not take any nonsense whatsoever.” It is high time for Lagos to fulfil the intent of this

Who is Afraid of Goodluck Jonathan? (1)

Goodluck Jonathan
Some people say Goodluck Jonathan is “clueless.” They would also have us believe he is a weak president. If so, how come his opponents are greatly afraid of him? People are not inclined to fear weaklings. Therefore it is telling that Goodluck Jonathan must be the most feared Head of State in the history of Nigeria.

Voting for Nigeria’s Future

Chief-Obasanjo-voting-in-Ab
What is the forthcoming 2015 presidential election about? Let us first identify what it is not about. It is not about improving the economy of Nigeria. If you insist it is, then you will need to tell me what either the PDP or the APC has told Nigerians it will do with regard to the economy. As a matter of fact, the only party whose economic programme we know is the PDP. At least, we can see what it has been able to achieve in the last 16 years. However, the APC is barely one year old. I need someone to tell me the economic policy of the APC. It is non-existent.

Aminu Tambuwal is a Traitor

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Mutawallen Sakwato
It is customary to refer to members of the House of Representatives as “honorable.” In which case, the appropriate title for the current Speaker might be the Right Honorable Aminu Tambuwal. But the activities of the Speaker over the last four years, capped by his recent defection to the APC, shows that such a title would be grossly misplaced if applied to him.

It is increasingly apparent that if Jonathan is “clueless,” his “cluelessness” is the magic that Nigeria needs at this very moment in time. By the time you are reading this, by the grace of God, the 218 kidnapped Chibok school-girls may have been released. If not, their release is imminent. A ceasefire with the Boko

I write a column in this on “Nigeria and the World.”

A Northern Christian Presidential Candidate for the APC

The fact that Nigeria is a country with some 350 ethnic groups makes it imperative that we must always be politically mindful of ethnic, religious and regional considerations. Failure to do this on the idealistic grounds that the quality of our public officials is more important than their ethnic and religious origin is bound to be problematic.

Season of Carpet-Crossing from the APC back to the PDP

Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola Formal Governor Of Osun State.
If you have not noticed it already, a new season has dawned in Nigerian politics. That season is one of carpet-crossing back to the PDP. About a year ago, there was a rash of defections from the PDP to the APC. Nearly 40 legislators left the ruling party for the opposition. Five PDP governors also followed suit. But now the movement is a one-way trajectory in the opposite direction. APC members are having buyers’ remorse and are making their way back as prodigal sons to the PDP.

Help! We Are Losing the War Against Boko Haram

File photo strategizing: The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Kenneth Minima (left); his Air Force counterpart, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (middle) and General Officer Commanding 3rd Division, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen John Zaruwa, aboard a Nigerian Air Force plane strategising with the aid of maps in the ongoing counter-terrorist operations in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, during a visit to the area, weekend.
We need to admit the truth; Nigeria no longer has an army worth its salt. The Nigerian army of today is a pathetic shadow of its glorious past. This explains why it is proving grossly inadequate at checkmating a Boko Haram army of some 10,000 men. As a matter of fact, ranged against the insurgency in the North-East, the army is now staring abject defeat in the face.

In my article on the recent election in Osun State, provocatively titled “How APC Lost the Osun Election;” I was lavish in praising the INEC. I said: “Attahiru Jega is by far Nigeria’s best public-servant. He is yet again, the real winner of the Osun election; and he is doing a fantastic job transforming the electoral-process in Nigeria for the better and even the best. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Jega and his entire INEC team for the excellent job they have been doing.”

Late Ameyo Adadevoh
I don’t like early-morning phone-calls, but this one was a distress-call from Femi-Kevin. “Do you know that the doctor at First Consultants that contracted Ebola is Dr. Adadevoh?” he asked. But if it were someone else, that someone else would also be somebody.
