Kaduna — A big percentage of persons that applied to become tricycle operators in Kaduna under the SURE-P programme are graduates, Daily Trust has gathered.
It was gathered that the state government recently under SURE-P programme purchased 700 tricycles, 40 taxi and 35 buses in a bid to improve state transport system.
As part of preparation for the distribution of the items, the state government yesterday commenced the screening of hundred of persons that applied for.
Applicants from Igabi, Chikun, Kaduna North and South local government areas were screened at the state's ministry of works premises. Our correspondent who was at the screening centre, observed that many of the applicants are graduates.
Speaking to our correspondent, one of the graduate applicants, Reuben Mark Gadani, said he decided to apply for the tricycle since he could not secure employment many years after graduation.
"I graduated from Kaduna State University in 2008 and since then I have been struggling to survive because of unemployment. If I get the tricycle, I will be happy because I will be able to fend for myself," he said.
On his part, Adamu Isah Jibril, who graduated from Kaduna Polytechnic in 2010, said he would be happy if he gets the tricycle.
Speaking to newsmen during the screening, state commissioner for works Suleiman Yahaya Richifa said government has subsidised the cost of the tricycles, cars and buses by 50 percent.
